Young Culture: The first and final headline tour
It was a bittersweet night in Detroit for fans who braved the freezing temps to see their favorite band one last time. Young Culture passed through The Shelter for an early Saturday night show on their first and final headline tour.
The show was opened by two acts, the first being NY band Wakelee, who were followed Bike Routes, from New Jersey. Both bands did an excellent job at warming up the crowd (literally) and converting some new fans, with some crowd members adding songs from the set to their personal playlists right then and there.
Knowing this would be the final time Detroit would see Young Culture, the band gave it their all and laid everything out on stage. They ruled the stage with some of the most explosive energy I’ve ever seen, and that continued throughout the night. From the very start, vocalist Alex Magnan could not stand still. Before you knew it a circle pit had opened up, as everyone took the energy and returned it back times ten.
Midway through the set, Alex paused to have a heartfelt moment and talk about how much Young Culture and the fans mean to him. He referred to Young Culture shows as a big family reunion and gushed about how much he’s loved to play these shows with his best friends for the last near decade. Admitting he was a little under the weather that day, he revealed that he didn’t think he’d be able to perform that night, and a song had been cut from the set. Asking for help from the crowd, he felt compelled to power through and add the song back in.
The last few songs of the night were pure chaos in the best way possible. A pit was opened up, fans started crowd surfing, including bassist Mackenzie Clarke, and if we weren’t already in the basement, I think the floor would have been shaking. Both the band and the fans alike were having the time of their lives, and I can’t think of a better way for Detroit to send off a band that was so special to so many in that room one last time.
