Paying “The Cost” SLWBRN's new single
SLWBRN (pronounced slow burn) has been bringing their melodic hardcore sound to Salt Lake City, Utah since 2022. Amassing a devoted following upon their release of their debut EP, “Where the Light Can’t Reach”, in October of that year. Members Jimmy Cudahy (vocals)., Tim Bur (guitar), Pat Dougherty (guitar), and Nic Osterhou (bass/vocals) have been delivering relatable lyrics to stunning melodies with every new release.
“The Cost” is a mournful lament for what was lost. The lyrics are simple and poignant. A song that perfectly encompasses the heaviness of being haunted by what was, especially when you know it can never be brought back. The opening riffs have a cold haziness to them that envelops you in a memory that slowly shifts into these fast-paced and chugging segments. The frequent use of the cymbals feels icy. They don’t overtake the rest of the drums, though, as they beat out this galloping rhythm. The backing vocals are distant, furthering the feeling of being far removed from the present. The bass whispers in the background, offering subtle depth behind the rest of the instruments.
The music video that was released to accompany the release of “The Cost” is equally haunting. Featuring Chris Sweet on drums. Dappled smatters of light leak through a blue and darkened space. A ghostly figure, played by Masha Taggart, wrapped in barbed wire, haunts the narrative as the band plays. A physical manifestation of a memory too painful to touch. The visuals blink in and out of sight, and faces are obscured in darkness. Altogether, it’s a simple yet sorrowful display.

This release is beautiful in its darkness. A perfect release as the days grow shorter and the nights grow colder. It’s all the heartbreak one would usually expect from midwest emo with all the musical style of metalcore. Despite being called a straight fire track by fans, it hits like ice in the veins, and I can’t wait to hear what’s next.
