Holding Absence have announced the release of their third studio album, Modern Life Is Lonely, set to debut on August 28, 2026 via Sumerian Records. The record marks the first full-length release under their new partnership with the label.
Comprised of vocalist Lucas Woodland, guitarist Scott Carey, and bassist Benjamin Elliott, Holding Absence are pushing themselves, and the alternative scene as a whole, into uncharted territory. While expanding their sound and creative vision to new horizons, the band remains true to their emotionally driven and intensely-raw songwriting style that has defined their career. They trek deep into the darkest and most painful subjects and transform that vulnerability into an immersive storytelling experience. The upcoming album may be their most ambitious take on this yet and is sure to send you on an emotional rollercoaster.
Modern Life Is Lonely is an eleven track record that dives into the complexities of the human experience and explores the struggles and emotions that define what it means to be human. The album centers around concepts of these experiences as told by the various characters that embody the contradiction of being anything but human, but longing for having human feelings once again. As they narrate the record’s story, the listener walks through an introspective reflection of how far from human we’ve come and the journey to find our way back, even through the most traumatic and difficult experiences and feelings along the way.

The band’s frontman Lucas Woodland spoke on the album and the recently released single, “Reflection”, stating, “We are ecstatic to release our new single ‘Reflection’, taken from our upcoming album Modern Life Is Lonely. This album is our boldest and most creative body of work to date, so we can't wait for you to hear the whole thing in August! In the meantime, we hope you enjoy ‘Reflection’.”
“Reflections,” along with its accompanying music video, centers on self-examination and embracing what you see to learn to love yourself again. It’s a journey of healing and preparing to open yourself up to every part of life, including both the joy and the pain. That embrace leads you to acceptance, and by doing so, you can learn to love the reflection you see instead of trying to run from it.

Continuing with themes of futuristic and sci-fi inspired visuals of prior releases, the video features some previously debuted characters as they continue to narrate the overarching story of the album. The visual contrasts of robotic and otherworldly characters collide with polarizing imagery of nature, human innovation, and human destruction. The opposing elements work well with the track's concept of opening yourself up to receive everything this life has to offer, and learning to embrace your humanity along the way.
