Poison the Well has made its mark in history as one of the most formative metalcore bands in the scene. Having started their journey in 1997, they’ve amassed a wealth of accolades, including acknowledgements by Loudwire and Kerrang! Magazine, and the Brooklyn Vegan. With indisputable influence, Poison the Well has decided to release new music for the first time since 2009’s The Tropic Rot. Having teased us with "Trembling Level" last January, their newest single drop, "Thoroughbreds," comes with the official announcement of a brand new album, PEACE IN PLACE, which will be coming out March 20th, 2026. After all this time, a new chapter in their story is being met with mounting excitement.
"Thoroughbreds" pulls from its namesake by immediately starting with a galloping pace. The insistent chug of the guitar brings in a mounting anticipation. The additional twangy guitar conjures imagery of being on a wide open plain. The interspersed twanging does even more to push the idea. As the tempo gains, it later bursts into the full band. The way the song goes from the breakneck pacing into these near-eerie vocals. The way that "Thoroughbreds" is styled feels like a refreshing break from the often cyber-leaning modern metalcore sound. The shouted main vocals weave with the haunting background tone that echoes into the air. The crashing cymbals that take over the drum sections bring a crispness to the sound. The new track isn’t an attempt to rewrite what makes Poison the Well so enticing, but a stunning showcase of what made them legends to begin with.

The music video is just as fascinating to watch. It hints at a rather dark storyline involving teeth. The horse and ranch vibes go rather fantastically with the song. It follows the simple formula of an overarching story with band shots acting as breaks in the narrative. Jane Moseley makes for an unsettling protagonist. As she frequently makes extensive eye contact with the camera, armed with a shovel, and a clear sense of determination. Her masterful command of the viewer’s attention is hypnotic. While on the more straightforward side, it still offers a solid watching experience along with a level of intrigue. Whose teeth are those? How did they get there? Will there be more to this story in future videos? I’m dying to find out. So much of the surrounding context is missing that there’s no choice but to crave more.

Poison the Well is also celebrating their upcoming release on a headline tour with support from Converge, Balmora, SPY, The Armed, and The Barbarians of California to appear on select dates. It’s a lineup of powerful performers set to kick off April 2nd at the Cleveland, Ohio, House of Blues. Tickets are online as of January 23rd, 2026, at 10 am local time, but there is still time to get in on the action. Despite having last toured in 2025, this feels like a wild adventure with an entirely new album setting the tone.
