Currents drops surprise EP 'All That Follows'

Currents has chosen to treat fans this Halloween with a surprise EP. ‘All That Follows’ has been released under SharpTone Records. The four piece band composed of Brian Wille [vocals], Chris Wiseman [guitar], Ryan Castaldi [guitar], Matt Young [drums], and Christian Pulgarin [bass] is known for their uncompromising sense of justice and deep dedication to their art. Between near non-stop tours and millions of streams the band has decided to reignite their creative spark by releasing an EP that defies all expectations. Opting to once again work with producer Ryan Leitru [We Came As Romans, Wolves At The Gate] on a handful of tracks, while Brian and Chris co-produced the rest of the material they’ve spawned a masterpiece.

Currents initially teased the new release with their single ‘It Only Gets Darker’. The song had garnered over 1.9 million streams when it was released in July. The synth lead opening to the EP immediately gives way to heavy instrumentals. With their signature vocal combination the lyrics go into burned bridges and abandoned faith. Expressing a fear that there is only darkness to look forward to the track leaves a harrowing impression.

‘My Severance’ stuns with riffs that have a hot desert twang to them. The song itself is extremely charged. The pervasive chugging riffs blended with dynamic and sharp tones creates an ethereal energy with the vocals. Ending on the declaration to abandon a faith that does not actually serve you.

Brian Wille was more than willing to cement the meaning of the song;

“It discusses how we’re taken advantage of by people who think they know better because they have more money than God and make whatever decisions they want,” he reveals. “They gain control of the government by lobbying. We have no way of combatting it unless we’re all together. So, you renounce your faith in the institution and stand up to it.”

Things seem to hit a cooler pace with ‘Making Circles’. No less powerful than the other tracks, the illusion has lifted at the cost of wondering “what’s next?” The clean vocals take the spotlight for this song with their near constant presence. They’re sorrowful and crooning as the screams take on a betrayed tone.The almost heavenly tone that stays in the background also grants a celestial energy to the entire song. There are less dramatic shifts in the instrumentals with them largely sticking to an even tempo and deep distorted riffs. It all

In a complete change of pace, ‘Cant Turn Back’ is full of rage. Almost exclusively screamed everything comes into sharp and aggressive focus. Even the cleaner sections are dripping with righteous venom. The guitar riffs mimic sirens as they wail throughout the song. The drums come into their parts with rolling and harsh precision. There's rolling thunder behind every beat.

‘Rise and Fall’ highlights Matt Young as the drums take over. They’re explosive and seem to never truly stop. From the call and response vocals there is a sensation of a story unfinished. The lyrics are uncertain about everything except for the consistent rise and fall of life. The synth and guitar both have a glitchy tone to them. When the final breakdown hits it’s with everything the band has, and then the entire EP comes to a close with not a whisper, but a scream.

Currents has done an amazing job on this EP taking all the darkest parts of reality and channeling them into their art. The lyrics are all meaningful and tap into this feeling of losing faith in everything you’ve been raised to believe. It comes as no surprise that they were able to continue to wow fans with this drop. It has all of the raw vulnerability and mystical style that Currents is known for. Providing this healthier outlet for all of the turbulent emotions fans may be facing shows how much they truly care and appreciate the place they’ve been given. As they close out the year touring in the UK and Europe we can’t wait for what comes next.
