Without A Face Hits us With a Double Single Slam

Things in the scene were too calm so brutal deathcore project Without A Face has decided to hit us with a one-two punch double single. The solo project of producer and musician Kevin Rolly, Without A Face had a strong entry into the scene last year with the EP Rat Poison. Now, they’re back with even more heavy, squealing, brutality. Alongside the announcement of signing to Papercut Recordings, Rolly has dropped "Needful Things" and "Resurfacing" (featuring Jacob Mathes of Orphan). The double release also comes with a combined visualizer so you can enjoy everything in one place.

The title track “Needful Things” hits all the hallmarks of a quality deathcore track. The vocals are squealed and screamed. The instrumentals do a solid job of delivering brutal basslines. The guitar goes from screeching highs to guttural lows. The drums also deliver on that kick heavy rolling thunder. The gem of this track is the comedic inclusion of a banjo at the beginning. It's funny. It startles you out of that face scrunching, headbanging, mindset. It breaks the formula keeping this song from feeling like dime a dozen background noise for the brutally inclined. That doesn't mean the song isn't fantastic without it. The breakdown has an excellent punch and Kevin Rolly is an unbelievably talented vocalist. “Needful things” is vicious and startling with how every note presses down on you. The blend between the two tracks is also almost seamless, which creates this unending loop of wild aggression.

All that being said, “Resurfacing” is my favorite of the two. It has my absolute favorite guitar tricks throughout, where the guitar mimics everything from sirens to laughter. It combines horror movie ad libs from The Last House on the Left with the stylized instrumentals to match. Instead of having one shocking moment the entire song is wickedly playful. The way Kevin and Jacob deliver on their parts hits nearly the full range of deathcore styles. There's squealing, growling, screaming, screeching, even some hardcore shouting that adds to how much experience both of them have in the scene. This track doesn’t offer a moment of rest or salvation it just goes at you. It offers an outlet for frustration by giving a perfect moshing soundtrack.

That delivery is by design. Without a Face was created as an outlet for Kevin Rolly. His desire to create music with emotional weight and a sense of that tumultuous urgency we all face. Delving into the genres that offered him the most solace in his own career. This release comes from his own struggles, a previous neck injury combined with ongoing hearing issues have created a desperate need to express those negative emotions and take back control. What comes from that are these outpourings of deeply moving yet fierce energy that you can't get enough of.
